Applied Engineer
Gabriel Talent
About the Company
An applied AI lab, roughly two years old and recently seeded, building systems for the freight and supply chain industry: fraud and identity verification, high-volume voice and document processing, and carrier and customer communications. One flagship product already screens thousands of cases a day at industry-wide scale. The founding team brings elite technical backgrounds, including prior experience scaling a business to tens of billions of dollars in annual volume. The internal culture is flat (everyone holds the same working title regardless of seniority, intern to executive) and built around heavy daily use of coding agents, with engineers expected to operate with founder-level ownership across the stack.
About the Role
Engineering here splits into two tracks, Applied and Systems/Research. This is the Applied seat: owning the customer-facing layer, turning what the systems/research team builds into shipped product, working directly with customers, and routing what you learn back into the roadmap.
What You'll Own
- Customer-facing features across the company's core products, from React front end through REST API integration
- Direct customer relationships: taking feedback, proposing solutions, and reacting quickly
- Database and data-architecture decisions made with scale in mind, not just the next release
- LLM-powered functionality, with a real understanding of latency, cost, and UX tradeoffs, plus quality metrics, evaluation, and failure controls
- Flagging systems-side limitations back to the systems/research team and working together to resolve them
- Coding agents as the default way of working: parallelizing tasks, verifying outputs, and spending your judgment on what to build rather than manual execution
What We're Looking For
- Hands-on React and REST API experience shipping real, production, customer-facing features
- Database and data-architecture experience with a genuine habit of planning for scale
- Real experience building products with LLMs consumed as an API, understanding the latency, cost, and UX tradeoffs, with ownership of model behavior, quality metrics, evaluation, and failure controls, not just prompting
- Heavy, fluent daily use of coding agents, assessed directly in the interview process
- Work that shipped to an identifiable user or paying customer, internal tools and unreleased personal projects don't clear the bar here
- Visible side projects, even small or incomplete ones, are valued, as is a physics or other quantitative-science background moving into software
- Bonus: distributed systems exposure, or prior forward-deployed or sales-engineering experience working directly with customers
Logistics
Fully remote, open to any geography. There's no fixed working-hours or timezone overlap requirement, the team runs asynchronous, round-the-clock coverage globally, so strong written communication matters. Compensation is $220K to $300K total comp (cash and equity) for a senior hire, flexible upward for a candidate who can clearly justify it.
